Vintage Coach Soho Is Expensive. Here’s What I Bought Instead.
I, like any Pinterest stroller interested in fashion, became an instant fangirl of the mini chocolate Soho Coach bag the moment I typed “Vintage Coach” into the search bar. My feed flooded with images of these adorable chunky, buckled bags decorated with bright red cherry charms.
I ‘bout farted and passed out.
They looked like they belonged on a dessert table at a wedding feast, which, coincidentally, is my favorite location at any and all weddings.
Imagine my surprise when I went searching for the vintage chocolate Soho bag secondhand and discovered the prices. They were… not cute. Outside of landing a very lucrative and generous brand deal, there was no way I was going to afford one of these on my indie creator salary.
Even bags in satisfactory condition were selling for outrageous amounts. Apparently, I have expensive taste. As my Pappy would say, I have “Champagne taste on a beer budget.”
So what’s a poor, farty girl to do?
Well, I’ll tell you what she do. She go shopping.
Alternatives to Vintage Coach
After realizing my dream of carrying a chocolate cherry delight on my arm might never happen, I decided to search for alternatives.
I wanted a bag from a reputable brand. Something charmingly chunky, chocolate, and well-made. Something that would last me years. A staple piece that would look absolutely decadent paired with a bright red cherry charm.
After some serious secondhand digging, I found 7 stellar vintage bags that give the same chocolate cherry energy as the Vintage Coach Soho without the luxury price tag.
You can find many of these bags on sites like Mercari and Vinted for under $40. And if you’re willing to restore a slightly loved bag (which I personally love doing), you can sometimes find these beauties for around $15.
Here are the bags, beginning with the one I thrifted for myself. Technically, she’s not a shoulder bag, she’s a crossbody. But—call the preacher man!—I am in love.
Fossil
My most recent purchase, which I have proudly adorned with a bright red cherry charm, is a black-and-brown leather Fossil bag made from signature printed canvas.
I originally bought it thinking it was going to be smaller than it actually was, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover it filled a hole in my closet I didn’t even realize I had.
This is the perfect “throw everything in it and go” bag.
It’s great for traveling, working on the road, running errands, or pretending you’re the kind of person who casually carries around a beautifully organized planner and a fancy pen.
(In reality, mine probably contains receipts from three months ago and a random lip gloss collection.)
Right now, this bag is sitting on my dining room table while I’m curled up on the couch speech-to-texting this article, and every time I look over at it, my heart is still ridiculously happy.
And the best part? I found it on Vinted for $7.
The reason it was so inexpensive was that it was missing its Fossil key charm. But the bag itself was in perfect condition, made from quality materials, and absolutely gorgeous. I even found a replacement Fossil key charm online for around $3.

B. Makowsky bags are a newer addition to my collection, mostly because I didn’t know they existed until recently.
If you can find them secondhand, many B. Makowsky bags are considered vintage because the brand is no longer widely produced. However, the bags that remain are often made with beautiful, heavy leather, chunky hardware, and the kind of details that make you stop scrolling.
eBay, Vinted, and Mercari are great places to hunt for these bags. You’ll find them in rich chocolate browns, warm caramel tones, and a variety of shapes and sizes.
Another fun thing about B. Makowsky? The oldies are collector pieces.
There’s something special about carrying a bag that has a little history behind it, especially when it’s from a lesser-known designer brand that deserves more attention.
And despite being rarer than something like a Coach bag, you can still find many vintage B. Makowsky bags for around $40 or less if you’re patient.

Kathy Van Zeeland bags are tragically connected to B. Makowsky bags.
Apparently, the two designers (Bruce Makowsky and Kathy Van Zeeland, the latter of whom is difficult to find info about) were once married and were major names in the Y2K handbag world. After their split, their companies changed hands, and unfortunately, the quality and popularity of the brands eventually declined.
But there’s good news! These vintage bags are still adorable, incredibly Y2K coded, and way more affordable than vintage Coach.
Just like B. Makowsky bags, Kathy Van Zeeland purses can still be found on secondhand sites like Mercari, Vinted, and eBay. And they are perfect for adding a little extra personality to your wardrobe.
While B. Makowsky bags tend to lean more classic and leather-focused, Kathy Van Zeeland bags often have a little more drama.
They’re frosted.
Sparkly.
Extra.
Most Kathy Van Zeeland bags can still be found for around $40 or less, making them a fun and affordable vintage addition to your collection.

For the longest time, I couldn’t find a Dooney & Bourke bag that I really vibed with.
Don’t get me wrong. Some are cute, but most are a little too… responsible. And I, a person who is deeply interested in tiny details, uniqueness, and the little stories behind objects, found myself wanting something with a little more personality.
But while searching for the perfect bag to sport a red cherry charm, I stumbled across some absolute winners in the Dooney & Bourke purse-o-sphere.
Specifically, their vintage printed canvas bags.
Once I started searching for their brown canvas designs and Tanza-style prints, I realized I had been overlooking an entire category of adorable and affordable vintage bags.
Vintage Dooney & Bourke bags typically run a little higher than some of the other brands mentioned in this article, especially because the brand has been experiencing a resurgence in popularity. However, you can still find some amazing deals secondhand. They usually run $30-$80 depending on the model, condition, and material. Still more affordable than vintage Coach.
If you’re patient, you can absolutely find a chocolate-toned Dooney that looks incredible with a cherry charm.

Brighton bags are another purse brand I’m fairly new to, but I have been absolutely shocked by how cute some of their vintage styles are.
For real, where have these been hiding?
A vintage Brighton bag usually ranges from around $20-$30, although highly sought-after styles can go for more. The fun thing about Brighton is that they have a lot of unique designs. Some are classic leather shoulder bags, while others have decorative details that make them feel more like wearable art. Take, for example, this nighttime butterfly bag I found on Vinted for $17
But, of course, there’s a downside.
Many Brighton bags feature silver hardware instead of the chunky brass hardware that gives the Coach Soho its signature look. On the bright side, this just means you get to play around with different cherry charm styles. A red-and-silver cherry charm would look absolutely adorable on one of these bags.

Okay, hear me out.

I know.
Technically, this doesn’t fit the chocolate cherry theme. And it’s not vintage. But, again, hear me out.
While it may not pair perfectly with the classic brass and glittery red cherry charm look, I have recently seen more pink-and-silver cherry charms popping up, and this bag feels like its soulmate.
There’s not a ton of Craft & Barrow that catches my eye, but this particular bag?
I cannot get it out of my head. It is a pinkberry-caramel dream. (Yes, I just invented a dessert flavor for a purse.)
And the best part? Because you’re shopping secondhand, you can often find these bags for around $15. Sometimes the best treasures are buried in the most unexpected places.

Where to Buy Cherry Bag Charms
While Coach does make its own super cute signature cherry and fruit charms, much like their bags, you’re going to have to pay out the wazoo for them.
Thankfully, there are plenty of affordable alternatives.
The cheapest brass-and-red glitter cherry charm I’ve found was actually from Amazon for $5-$7.
They do sell out often, and seasonal items don’t always stick around forever, but you can also find similar options online.
Etsy and small handmade shops have tons of cherry charms in different styles, including red glitter and brass, pink and silver, acrylic cherries, and rhinestone cherries. There are even other food items like pretzels, chili peppers, and more, all inspired by Coach fan favorites.
The fun part?
You can completely change the personality of a bag just by switching out the charm.

If you’re planning to jump onto Vinted or Mercari and hunt down your own chocolate cherry dream bag, here are a few tips:

There is something so special about finding a bag that feels like you. A bag with history, with personality, one that doesn’t look exactly like everything else sitting on a department store shelf. And the fact that you can find beautiful, quality leather bags secondhand for a fraction of the cost?
